Edelman has made a bid to boost its healthcare lobbying firepower by hiring the head of policy and public affairs at Pfizer UK.

Former Tory operator Alan Maine has joined Edelman as a senior director after eight years at the pharmaceutical giant.

In the new post, he will oversee the health policy, public affairs and advocacy offering in Edelman’s 55-strong team, led by heath MD Kate Hawker. He will also work close with the UK public affairs team led by Boris Johnson’s former chief of staff Will Walden.

Maine is a former Conservative party staffer who was head of the foreign affairs section at Conservative HQ before joining the pharmaceutical firm Merck Sharp & Dohme as external affairs manager in 2004.

Edelman’s major health clients include GSK, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis and Sanofi.
